Our family lives most of the year in New York. However, when the weather is coldest, we spend a few months in Florida, and we have a summer retreat on the lake that allows the children to enjoy the outdoors during the summer months. When my mother became ill, I knew she was going to need more care than I could provide, but I didn’t want to be away from her when we traveled. I needed someone who would be open to traveling with us. We researched our options and ended up hiring a travel nurse. The travel nurse is able to provide mother with the care she needs, and she simply travels with us.
At first, one travel nurse was enough. Mother didn’t need constant care, and we could step in when the nurse needed time off. However, as Mother’s condition worsened, we started interviewing for a second and finally a third travel nurse. In her last days, the three nurses worked together to provide her with the best care while keeping her comfortable and at home. With three nurses, they were able to cover every hour of every day, so that she always got the care she needed. It was a blessing to us that mother was able to be with us right to the end and that we could still live our life as normally as possible.
