Body Composition Scales and Your Personal Goals

If you are like me, you would like to be in better shape. While it is often the easiest measuring stick, how much you weigh is really a poor way of discerning just how healthy a person is. Sure, there are the extreme ends of the spectrum that inherently dictate a health risk, but if you are trying to judge whether a six foot tall male is in shape, you could be dealing with a 50+ pound range.

The reason weight is a poor measure of health is because body composition isn’t fixed. You can have a 200 pound individual who is 10% fat, and you could have one that is 50% fat. While it used to be very difficult to figure out a person’s body composition, today you can actually buy body composition scales that will measure it for you, while telling you your weight. Now, you should always remember that while body composition scales can be very accurate, they aren’t entirely foolproof. However, with that said, they are very consistent, and if you are trying to measure progress, they really are the best cross-section of practicality and accuracy. So, if you are looking to measure more than just your weight, consider getting a scale that measures your body composition as well; it could be a real help as you work towards your personal goals!
